About Sterling Heights Dumpster Rental Group
Locally owned, over 13 years in, and we know the county's debris rules, Michigan's open-burning rules, the tarped-load requirement, the run to a licensed transfer station or landfill, and the heavy clay that shapes every Sterling Heights job.

How this started
Dominic Petrella had worked construction and hauling around Sterling Heights and Macomb County for years when he started the company with a single truck and one container in 2012. He'd spent long enough on job sites to know exactly what went wrong with dumpsters: containers that turned up late or in the wrong size, prices that changed once the load crossed a scale, and out-of-town haulers who didn't know the run to the transfer station, the Michigan rules on burning, how heavy this wet clay gets out of the ground, or how a severe storm or a flooded basement fills a job with debris.
The idea was simple: run it like a Sterling Heights outfit that actually knows Sterling Heights. More than a decade in, the operating principle hasn't moved: tell people the truth about what they need, protect the property, keep the job clean, know exactly where the debris goes, and charge the number that was quoted.
What we actually do differently
We know the local rules and where the debris goes. In Sterling Heights the curbside carts won't take construction debris, Michigan's rules won't let you burn it, and a licensed transfer station or landfill is where it goes - so a real project's debris goes covered to the J. Fons Co. Transfer Station on Elmridge Drive or the Macomb County transfer station on 21 Mile Road, with refrigerant appliances, tires, electronics and paint routed to the right place, and clean metal and concrete kept separate for recycling or reuse. We know the run and the county programs cold, and we keep the job clean and compliant. On the day, that's the whole job.
We recommend smaller containers. This one surprises people. Dense material - plaster, tile, concrete and clay-caked demo - reaches a container's tonnage allowance while it still looks half empty. Recommending the 15 yard instead of the 20, or a dedicated 10 for the concrete, costs us revenue and saves the customer money. We do it anyway.
We're built for a Metro Detroit auto suburb and Michigan's seasons. Sterling Heights grew up as an auto-industry suburb - the Stellantis Sterling Heights Assembly Plant is right here - so much of the work is remodels of the post-war ranch homes, new-construction debris out in the fast-growing surrounding subdivisions, and estate and rental turnovers - bulky and dense debris both - and severe-storm, winter and basement-flood cleanup is a way of life here, not an exception. When a storm rolls through and the whole area needs containers at once, being a local crew is what lets us respond - and we size a storm container to the mixed debris and get it out fast.
One number, tarped loads. The flat rate covers delivery, the rental period, collection, the disposal and a stated tonnage allowance, with the overage rate quoted in the same breath. And every load leaves tarped and secured for the haul, as Michigan law requires. No fuel surcharge, no environmental fee appearing on an invoice for the first time.
Why local knowledge matters here
Sterling Heights is Michigan's fourth-largest city and the second-largest in Macomb County - a Metro Detroit suburb built up in the post-war auto boom. It's home to the Stellantis Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, and its neighborhoods run from 1950s-70s ranch and colonial subdivisions to newer developments on the north and east edges, while the communities around it - Warren, Shelby Township, Macomb Township - keep growing. That mix shapes the work: constant remodels of the older ranch homes, new-construction debris out in the surrounding subdivisions, estate and rental turnovers, and after every severe storm or hard winter, storm and basement-flood cleanup. And nearly every job that moves earth hits the flat lake-plain here - heavy, wet, poorly draining clay, rather than easy soil - which is a big part of why basement flooding is so common.
Then there's the regulatory reality that shapes all of it: construction debris being barred from the curbside carts, Michigan's open-burning rules that ban burning construction debris statewide and yard-waste burning outright in a city this size, the requirement that C&D go to a licensed transfer station or landfill, the reuse of clean concrete and brick as clean fill, the recovery of clean metal, wood and cardboard, the ban on burning treated lumber, and the tarped-load requirement on every haul. A company that works the system every day knows all of it. We quote each job on what it actually is, and we'll explain the difference if you want to hear it.
The people you'll deal with
- Dominic Petrella — Owner & Founder. Years in local construction and hauling before starting the company. Still takes sizing calls, particularly on anything involving concrete, heavy clay-caked demo, demolition or a tricky placement on an older lot.
- Ryan Kowalski — Operations Manager. Runs the schedule, the swaps and the contractor and property-management accounts, and knows which runs across Macomb County a loaded truck can and can't make in a day. If you need a same-day swap, he's the one who makes it happen.
- Chad Brennan — Lead Driver. Has been placing containers on Sterling Heights' subdivision lots and tight older ranch driveways for years and sizes a load by eye better than most. If he says a 30 won't fit your lot, it won't.
- Nicole Sawicki — Customer Care Lead. First voice on the phone most mornings, and the person who will walk you through the local rules, what can and can't go in the container, and where the electronics, tires, appliances and brush need to go.
